The Marvel Multiverse Explained Simply (Without the Confusion)
Demystifying the Multiverse: what is a variant, what is a branch timeline, how does the TVA operate, and why do Tobey Maguire and Hugh Jackman coexist with Tom Holland and Robert Downey Jr.?
01The Hierarchy: Universe → Timeline → Branch → Multiverse
The biggest misconception about Marvel is that every superhero movie took place in the same universe. That is not true.
Prior to 2019, 20th Century Fox owned the film rights to the X-Men and Fantastic Four, while Sony Pictures owned Spider-Man. Marvel Studios produced Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor independently.
With the Multiverse Saga, Marvel Studios established a brilliant narrative architecture: these past movies are not "erased"—they exist as authentic alternate parallel universes across an infinite cosmic web.
02What Is an Incursion?
Introduced in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, an Incursion is the ultimate cosmic catastrophe. When someone prolongs their physical presence in an alternate universe or meddles with multiversal boundaries, the dimensional membrane between the two realities erodes.
Eventually, the two universes gravitate toward each other and collide. If an incursion occurs, both universes are completely annihilated, destroying trillions of lives across both dimensions.
• Doctor Doom’s entire motivation in Avengers: Doomsday stems from preventing Incursion extinction.
• In Marvel comics, Doom saves fragments of dead realities to build Battleworld.
